Tutoring: A Key to Unlocking Educational Equity

Structured, intensive tutoring programs can spell the difference between success and constant failure for all children as we struggle to emerge from Covid-19 school shutdowns. But poor parents simply can’t afford $600-a-month price tags for this well-documented source of educational help. The good news is afterschool and summer programs have the potential to unlock new doors of educational equity–if the programs are done right! For five years, Charlotte Community Services Association has embedded the SMART Tutoring Program in its 21st Century afterschool and summer programs at no cost to parents. This workshop will highlight the lessons learned about staff selection, training, curriculum, technology, teacher-student ratio and, yes, student incentives. It also will address the needs of Spanish-speaking students. But more importantly, it will provide the master key to achieving an average Reading Lexile increase of 350 points for true educational equity.

The Play’s the Thing: Making Connections Through Theatre

Join us to learn some creative ways to connect with students by allowing them to tell their stories through the voices of fictional characters. This fast-paced, interactive session will equip you to build community and trust among even the most disengaged students using applied theatre methods combined with deep-dive group discussion circles and team-building activities. We will explore practical steps to deepen relationships and rebound from the isolation of the pandemic, and you’ll leave with everything you need to facilitate all the workshop activities in your own program.

The Art of Adaptation: How Puppets Can Break Down Barriers

How can we authentically connect with students to support both social emotional and literacy skill development? How can teaching artists actively support classroom teachers through creative collaboration? This past year has reminded us all of the importance of adaptability, flexibility, and perseverance. It has brought forth new ways of working with old formats and introducing new tools to engage with familiar strategies. Teaching Artists have played a key role in this exploration and adaptation. Moonshot Academy is an after school and summer program run by The Learning Alliance in Vero Beach, Florida that supports struggling readers through an Enriched Literacy approach. In March 2020, to ensure that we would be able to continue to serve students, we started to create original, interactive video content with puppets that our teachers could use with students, whether on campus or online. Who doesn’t love puppets? We started with a single puppet reading stories and we now have a dynamic duo of characters that model lessons for teachers, engage students in reading, and explore the community, making literacy learning come alive everywhere. We knew we had a dynamic way to reach the students through the screen; we had no idea when we started just how much WE would learn from this journey. Come share in a bit of the magic we have created, the insights gained, and envision creative collaborations to support your own communities.

Shifting the Lens

It is more important than ever that our afterschool teams working with children and youth understand child development, trauma, best practices and recovery strategies. How do we educate and inspire our teams to shift their lens to dig deep when children and youth exhibit troubling behaviors, or poor school performance? This workshop will share a framework to begin shifting the lens of child and youth workers from asking “what is wrong with you?” to asking “what happened to you?” Learn how to disseminate information, provide tools, set up and track training, and provide strategies and coaching to help child and youth workers better support student success

Resilience Building Spaces: A Primer

Before the advent of COVID-19, some of our most academically vulnerable students were also disproportionately affected by trauma (students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities). As we leave the landscape of the pandemic behind, many additional students are struggling to process the trauma of the last 18 months. Now more than ever, our commitment to equity demands that all students have access to trauma informed spaces to foster growth and academic success. Trauma informed spaces are a proven strategy that promotes feelings of physical and psychological safety for individuals exposed to high levels of trauma. Included in SAMHSA’s Six Principles of Trauma Informed Care, trauma informed physical space design is a key part of any diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative in today’s classroom. Join Anna Blount, Founder and Executive Director of Team Up Mentoring, for a deep dive into what constitutes a trauma informed classroom, its resilience building effects on the body and brain, and a toolkit to help you transform any space into an inclusive haven for academic pursuits

REACH Summer Acceleration Academy: A Celebration of Success!

Participants will receive in-depth guidance on how Foundations, Inc. designed their half and full-day REACH Summer Acceleration Academies for students entering first through sixth grade. They will receive examples of ways to strategically design a program that provides students with explicit instruction in reading and math while integrating whole-child growth using social-emotional and STEAM lessons. Sample daily and weekly schedules, professional development topics, assessment and curriculum tools, and resources will be shared. A summary evaluation report compiled by Professor Jon Supovitz, Executive Director of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education will be presented

Learn to Read, Arts Education and More: FREE e-Learning Resource

Learning to read has never been more fun than with this exciting, always FREE, e-learning resource available online and on tablets. You will see our PreK-8 learning activities, beginning with sounds of the alphabet, and progressing through language arts. Kids build self-esteem and tools for success while learning grade-appropriate reading and STEM-based material! We turned “STEM” into “STEAM” by adding Reading and the Arts. In our Arts curriculum, students learn about visual art, dance, and music and how these disciplines interact with various aspects of their lives. Arts education expands their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by drawing connections between the Arts and the principles of STEM. Our educational enrichment curriculum explores the connections between literacy, the arts, and core subject areas, such as the sciences and humanities.

Leap Into Science: Cultivating Creativity and Critical Thinking by Integrating Children’s Storybooks and STEAM Activities

Join The Franklin Institute and the National Girls Collaborative for an interactive session focused on curriculum and strategies from Leap into Science (, a nationally recognized and free STEAM and literacy program engineered by The Franklin Institute. Participants will be introduced to the Leap into Science curriculum that is flexibly designed for PreK – 3rd grade children and families, and intended for preschools, afterschool programs, and libraries. The curriculum intentionally incorporates children’s books with hands-on STEAM activities and is supported by the Core Four strategies which help children build critical thinking and literacy skills through creativity. These research-based strategies include asking questions, encouraging scientific thinking, cultivating rich dialogue, and making connections. Attendees will experience a Leap into Science workshop as learners including a read-aloud of a children’s book and hands-on STEAM activity. They will have the opportunity to learn about and join the Leap into Science National Network of educators dedicated to supporting STEAM and literacy learning for children and families. Network members have access to the Leap into Science website with free curriculum and training resources.
