Callback: Tools for Returning to conversations About Identity

Yijie Zhu and Kai Kahlila, Full Circle Equity
Grades: 6-12
This hands-on workshop will introduce activities that help foster the interpersonal relationships necessary to hold difficult conversations about topics such as race in the classroom. Having open and honest discussions about complex issues takes a great deal of vulnerability. Especially as we return to in-person activities, we may find ourselves needing to reestablish interpersonal bonds before we can be open with one another. The introduced activities, adapted from Theatre of the Oppressed, are selected for appropriate use with youth, with no physical contact – ideal for our post-pandemic classrooms. In this workshop, we will explore games that teach consent, power dynamic awareness, and trust. We will also explore how to use the games played to launch into larger conversations about race, class, and identity. Although the activities introduced are rooted in theatre, no acting will be required! Attendees should, however, come ready to move!
