Let’s Get Graphic! Tips on Pairing Graphic Novels and STEM Activities

ABSTRACT:

Oftentimes graphic novels and manga are inaccurately cataloged as comic books. Graphic novels are a unique print medium growing in popularity amongst all Grade Level. They now cover topics ranging from classic literature to stories about characters dealing with relevant challenges and issues. Engaging reluctant readers is already tricky – and graphic novels promote visual literacy and reduce the text load, allowing youth to connect and comprehend a theme in more than one way.

Now let’s tackle some STEM! Tying literacy to STEM is easier than ever – but may be a new frontier for some educators. Learn how to use a microscope and read about Squish the amoeba! Bring in propulsion lessons by rocketing into a story set in space! All participants will receive direct links to free resources; stay for the raffles to win some cool books and kits!

How do we create environments that provide LGBTQIA+ youth the same supportive and safe experiences that all youth deserve? Research tells us that LGBTQIA+ youth face specific stresses, challenges, and risks — and are often isolated from the support of their own community.
