Leading through Change and Challenge

We know that a positive culture focused on high-quality youth development must be embraced and embodied at all levels of the organization. Nothing demonstrates the culture of an organization more than leadership in times of crisis and change. By giving leaders a space to discuss their approach to managing and maintaining quality during the recent COVID-19 crisis, we can deepen our understanding of best practices in leadership to ensure access to high-quality youth development practices. During this session, participants will hear from and join in a conversation with those who’ve been managing through a crisis, adapting to changes in the environment, and offering responsive afterschool programming that maintains quality standards as a result. Participants will also experience activities that maintain mission and values even amid crisis. Through facilitated discussion, participants will hear from youth (demonstrating the value for and processes that support youth voice among other quality programming standards) as well as from organization and program leaders. Reflective activities will help participants take ideas to share with their teams and consider implementing them at home.
