To become avid readers and to reap the full benefits of lifelong literacy, children have to see both themselves and worlds beyond their own in the stories they read in books—impossible if children don’t have regular access to books that widely represent society. Designed to illuminate the inequity in representation in children’s books and the importance of portraying ALL children, honoring diverse backgrounds, languages, abilities, and perspectives, as well as including stories by and about people of color, this workshop will act as the foundation for rethinking the diversity of your program’s bookshelves to promote and support literacy-rich experiences. This hands-on, discussion and immersion-rich experience introduces the concept of mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, provides practice in selecting books that are reflective of the wide and varied experiences of children, includes a real-world experience seeing oneself in the pages of a book, and offers practical tips for program application.
