Participants will be led through the inquiry process through both a student lens and in reflection, as facilitators to elevate their practice of culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and science practices while engaging in hydroponics. STEMSoul uses a learner-centered approach that creates space and access so students can use their lived experience to enhance their “doing” of science as they are immersed in science practices and thinking. This method increases opportunities for learners to create an identity as scientists, which impacts education and careers in science.
Hydroponics is a way to grow food without using soil. Since many urban youth live in food deserts or in families where there is food insecurity, hydroponics can be a way to provide families with more options for making healthier food choices.
