Dr. Anna Hinton

Dr. Anna Hinton is the Director of the Charter Schools Program Division at the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, she oversees nearly $500 million in annual discretionary grant funding for charter schools. Before assuming her current position, Dr. Hinton focused on grantmaking strategy and policy development, emphasizing the support of evidence-based instructional strategies in the Office of Elementary and Secondary. She also previously managed a division dedicated to discretionary grants that support alternative education, including the Magnet Schools Assistance Program, Full-Service Community Schools, the DC Opportunity Scholarship, and the Promise Neighborhoods Program. Earlier in her career, Dr. Hinton served as a special assistant to the director of the Student Achievement and School Accountability Program, where she managed the daily operations of the Title I, Part A program, part of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

Dr. Hinton holds a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Doctorate in Sociology from American University.
